Film (typed) merit and excellence exemplars
I will attach merit and excellence essays written about 'Slumdog Millionaire.' Have a look how the students have incorporated their 'you add' sections into their essays. When an explain paragraph is really long, it has been split up to make it easier to read.
You can comment on many small moments throughout the film, rather than two big events, as it helps you show an appreciation for the film as a whole.

- Unfamiliar text
Each paper is worth 4 credits, giving you a total of 12 external English credits.
NOTE:
If you want to write practice essays in your own time, then I will mark them for you. Later on I will load questions onto the weebly and you may select one from there. Even if you do not write the actual essay, try and write a plan for the questions with details about what you would write. You should always spend 5 minutes planning your essay in the exam. This helps keep you focused on answering the question.
Things to study:
Novel:
Film:
Unfamiliar Text:
- It would be a good idea to reread it, or skim read it, before the exam.
- Learn themes (abuse of power, the power that friendship can have, loyalty, the importance of thinking for yourself, human cruelty etc) and examples from the novel that link to the themes. You MUST learn important quotes.
- Pay attention to characters. Learn what they're like, how they change etc
- Learn key events and what they show, why they are important to the novel/characters/themes
- Remember you must answer BOTH parts of the question. You should have two explain paragraphs if possible. There may not be time in the exam for three explain paragraphs. This will not stop you from doing well.
- Look through the 2014 examination papers - attempt to write essay plans for some of the questions.
Film:
- I will play it again during two lunchtimes before the real exam for anyone who wants to re-watch it in order to refresh their memory. This is optional. I also have copies that I can loan out.
- You must learn key scenes for characters and themes.
- Think about the setting and the part it plays in the film.
- You should focus on the opening and closing scenes.
- You will need to learn key film techniques that are used in the scenes you use in your essays.
- You must answer both parts of the question.
- Look through the 2014 examination paper - attempt to write essay plans for some of the questions.
Unfamiliar Text:
- You should be attempting the practice sheets you are getting each week, and marking them (answers are up on the weebly) or handing them in to me.
- You can work through your 1.3 book you were given at your own pace, though we will do some in class. There are answers in the back to check your progress. Remember, you must not write in the book!
- Use the flashcards you were given (these documents on the UT section of the weebly if you have lost them) to help you learn the effects of the language features.
- Learn your language features if you do not know them well. This is essential.
- Remember: IDENTIFY means NAME the language feature/aspect they are asking for. Give an EXAMPLE means pull out the example from the text and quote it in your answer. If the question specifically says ONE then only give ONE.
